I am Joining an Army #endpolionow

by Elizabeth

This past summer I dressed all in pink with my pink hat, (I was in a PINK mood I guess) jumped on a bus, and headed to the Global Poverty Project headquarters in NYC.

There are so many opportunities I have as a blogger. I get to travel, review awesome products, and consult with fantastic companies but I always have a yearning to be part of something bigger, something better. In NYC, on that day, I became part of that something.

I am joining an army. An army that is set out to kill. An army set out to destroy a virus that is leaving people crippled and dying. I am ready to do my part to eradicate this deadly disease called Polio.

Maybe, you have heard of polio. I have more than heard “of” it, I heard about it as my Grandma use to tell me about pools being closed and it being a very scary time. That scary time stopped thanks to medical intervention but it “only” stopped for us. Polio is still alive and well in other parts of the world.

It is still destroying. As an American there is a tremendous amount of differing perceptions of vaccinations and links to autism. Although, I waver back and forth with opinion on whether autism is linked to vaccination I am CERTAIN that polio is linked to death. In a time when we are so dedicated to a battle of medical research can we just look at history for one second?

  • 1. We know this particular vaccination works. We have seen it in our own history.
  • 2. We know it can save lives. (Maybe you know someone with polio or was related to someone with it)
  • 3. and……I know it will just take one signature to vaccinate a child on this End Polio Now petition thanks to the @rotary donation per signature.

In the spotlight of criticism I have heard people say we need to take our eyes off of vaccination and focus on food and clean water. Of course, I believe that these things are part of the ultimate equation to health and health can lead to normal stable lives. But let’s think about this for a minute-some may feel this is a “what came first the chicken or the egg” situation! I am working with the Global Poverty Project not “just” the End Polio Now campaign! The ultimate goal here is to create a world with no poverty. In order to do that we need to have parents that are able to work and a healthy society. Health IS part of the equation. Health is important!

Global Poverty Project emailed me this morning saying, “More than 6,500 people from 90 countries have now added their voice to the call to realize the end of polio.” I wondered how many were American. I was wondering if Americans are able to visualize part of the world that does not have the luxuries that we do. Clean Water, Food, Shelter, and proper medical care.

It doesn’t have to be about what you believe about vaccinations cause or have any part in autism, we all can have a part in making our children have one less vaccination to take. If we eradicate this disease, we can change the world forever. Autism causing or not, just think, this will be ONE LESS reason for our grandkids to get stuck with a needle. I remember each time my child got stuck, if I remember my newborn babies cry the first time I was there to watch a shot go into his tiny thigh I remember how much it hurt me. If polio is STOPPED now…….(we are so close) we are stopping our OWN children from having to hear ONE less cry from ONE less stick in our future grandchild and it can all be because we have ONE less disease in the world. Guess what…..it can all be helped by ONE person’s signature…..yours???

With an overwhelming display of public support for eradication before the summit we could secure the financial commitments needed to realize the end of this debilitating disease.

I am part of the largest non-violent army in the world. Will you be?

I am Piper! Are you? WE are part of THE missing piece. Together, we can make the end of polio a reality.

(I am not compensated for writing this post. I will only every be rewarded by writing this post if the world is rid of Polio forever. Let’s make this happen. If you want to become part of this team for Polio Eradication-tweet, post, like, share, facebook, or email me)

(my kiddo grinning and bearing it as he gets a round of select vaccinations)
